Video and Sound Production - FINAL PROJECT
Lecture
Week 10
In this week, we tried out shooting stop motion video with groups assigned by Mr. Martin. We work together as groupmates to prepare the materials needed like papers, clay, tripod etc. for the trial shoot. In this trial shoot, we used DSLR camera and phone to shoot to experience two different ways to shoot a stop motion video.
Freeze Test Shoot:
Prepare all materials below for Week 10 shoot. For Paper Cut, prepare all characters, props for shoot.
Each group has 4-5 members and attends only one hour Class Time:
Clay: The Cost of the Call 1st scene: 00:04-00:13
Paper cut: Adopt Don't Shop 2nd scene: 00:19-00:43

Week 1 Practice 3 different stop motion videos
1.Russian fun stop-motion animation "The Little Priest and the Old Nun"
"The Little Priest and the Old Nun" is a charming Russian stop-motion animation that tells a whimsical story about the interactions between a young priest and an elderly nun. Set in a quaint, picturesque village, the animation explores their everyday lives, highlighting humorous and heartwarming moments as they navigate their responsibilities and form a unique bond. The animation is characterized by its intricate craftsmanship, detailed miniature sets, and the clever use of traditional Russian folklore elements, making it a delightful and visually engaging experience.
2. HAPPIER ALONE, Multi-Award Winning stop motion animation
3.The Kitchin

Week 11
After the trial shooting in week 10, Mr. Martin conducted a lecture about editing stop motion video using Premiere Pro and After Effects. We can choose between these two software to edit our final stop motion video. The instruction is given by Mr. Martin through the Google Slide below.
In the Final Project, we are assigned to create a stop motion video. Before creating it, we need to do research on it and share 3 of our favorite Stop Motions rationale.
Shooting Stop Motion Animation
1. Pre-production: Prepare storyboards, record each shot, collect sound clips, prepare materials, make puppets and backgrounds
2. Shooting:
Shooting with mobile phone camera: Shoot with Stop Motion Animation App
- Mount the phone on a tripod
- Use manual exposure and focus
- Shoot in daylight, but use artificial lighting
- Choose JPEG L/Fine
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Editing Stop Motion Animation
- Can be edited (cut) in Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe After Effects
- Resolution size: 1920 x 1080
Funny metaphorical animation proposal:
In week 12, we bought clay and spent hours making different versions of the figurine, eventually settling on white and discarding one of the designs.

When I made the figurine, I added toothpicks to hold it in place or to make it easier to pose. The shooting was done at night without considering the lighting problem. The shooting was repeated halfway and the lighting was adjusted so that the subject had only one direction of light source and shadow.

Stop Motion Editing
Before I started editing, I collated the clips into one video, making sure they were in the same place to avoid losing files. Then, we added clips to the clip, making sure the frame size was 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Reflection
During the various stages of this stop-motion animation project, we tried our best to keep the positions of objects and cameras consistent. However, despite our care, there were still cases where objects were in different positions in the clips. Through post-editing, we adjusted the speed and duration of the clips and added sound effects to make the video content more coherent. These adjustments helped us to solve the problems that occurred and made the final result more attractive and interesting. The entire video production process was challenging but very fun. We learned a lot in each step and are very happy with the final result. This project not only allowed us to exercise our skills, but also deepened our understanding and love of stop-motion animation.
