Assignment 1 Editorial Illustration (Decisive Moment)
October 30th
20 points
The Brief:
Editorial illustration is typically a type of work has a deep history in political satire, especially though extends beyond the world of politics. Every day, newspapers and magazines print illustrations alongside their articles to illuminate some element of the concepts for the reader. For this assignment, you will be assigned a story and break it apart into its narrative structure. You will choose one of the turning points in the narrative and illustrate that “Decisive Moment”
Editorial illustrations are produced for newspapers, magazines, and websites to add a visual dimension to an article. This serves two main functions -it helps to capture the attention of readers as they scan the publication, but it also helps to add a new perspective to the article. For this assignment, Mr. Hafiz Zamri had to find an article/story about urban legends. These legends may be local or international. The art style must come from art Deco.
Urban legend/urban rumor (folklore, story or legend)
1. Animal related 2. Car related 3. Accidents 4. Sex and scandal 5. Crime related 6. Business and profession 7. Government behavior
9. Horror and thrillers 10. Academy related 11. Virtual worlds 12. Paranormal activity
I. Urban legends intersect with urban fantasy
- Incorporating traditional fantasy story elements (eg. Vampires, orcs, elves, and artifacts) into an urban setting has nothing to do with an original quest
- It's written by a fixed author, completely fictional. However, urban legends are narrated by "the personal experience of the speaker's friends," so you need to distinguish between true and false.
Ⅱ.Urban legend and superficial fantasy intersect, but are not identical
- In ancient, backward villages or ancient cities,Urban legends occurred in the modern era after the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, and were influenced by modernization.
Ⅲ.
- Urban legend ≠ fairy tale
- Urban legend ≠ rumor
Introduction:
Week 7
Session 1
Practical: Story research
This week, we were introduced to a new assignment in which we had to illustrate a particular turning point in our chosen urban legend. Mr Hafiz also added that we were only allowed to use the art deco style for this illustration.
The urban legend I chose comes from the German urban legends of Western countries, later created by Neil Gaiman into the DC Comics Sandman, which pinched together urban legends with Norse mythology, and I think of "The Sandman" as a kind of virtual urban legend, which was very popular in the United States in the 1990s.
That (decisive)Moment (14/11/2023):
Night comes, the sandman will turn himself into a crow, let the crow instead of his eyes to the earth to visit the people who have not yet entered the sleep.
Legend has it that he would throw sand in the faces of small children to make them dream at night, the rubies in his hands can make people fall asleep quickly, and the shit we wake up in the morning to see is the sand of the sand man. So the Sandman has three tools: sand, rubies, and masks.
If the children do not obey, they will gouge out their eyes and take them back to their castle (the first person in the world to enter the dream, Sandman was born, Sandman is the king of dreams and has his own castle).
Because there is desire, there is a dream, and because there is a dream, there is enough power to move on in real life. The interweaving of human desires breaks people's false lies and self-deception. The Sandman is philosophical, through every conflict, let people understand the importance (dream), and "dream" is so fascinating.
Not being able to sleep and not being able to wake up is terrible, because if the sandman, being imprisoned, the waking world will always be chaotic, some people will not be able to sleep, some people will never be able to sleep. In fact, this disease does exist in real life, called "narcolepsy", and severe people may suddenly fall asleep during a speech, or even fall asleep while standing for a second!
